The Foolish Old Man moves the mountains — with steady effort and an unshakable will, no task is too great.

At ninety years old, Yu Gong gathered his family and said, “Let's work together and move these two mountains away.” His family agreed. Each day they carried hoes and shoulder poles up to the slopes, digging earth and hauling stones.
A neighbor named Zhi Sou — the Clever Old Man — laughed at him. “You're old. How could you ever move a mountain?” Yu Gong answered, “I will die, but my sons will stay. And my sons will have sons, and they will have sons. Our line has no end — but the mountains cannot grow taller. Why shouldn't we wear them down?”
The gods in heaven heard him and were moved by his determination. They sent two mighty spirits down to carry the mountains away. From then on, nothing blocked the road in front of Yu Gong's home.
The story of Yu Gong moving the mountains reminds us that with firm resolve and steady effort, even the greatest task can be done.
