亡羊补牢
羊跑了才修补羊圈。比喻出了问题以后及时补救,还不算晚。
Mend the pen after losing the sheep — it's not too late to fix a problem once you've noticed it.
从前,有一个牧羊人,养了一群羊。一天早上,他去羊圈一看,发现少了一只羊。原来羊圈破了一个洞,夜里狼从洞里钻进来,把羊叼走了。
邻居劝他:“赶快把洞补好吧,不然还会丢羊的。”牧羊人却说:“羊已经丢了,补还有什么用?”他没有动手。
第二天,他又去看羊,果然又少了一只。他这才明白过来,赶紧找来木头和草,把那个洞堵得结结实实。从此,他的羊再也没丢过。
后来人们就说:“亡羊补牢,未为晚也。”——丢了羊再补羊圈,并不算晚,只要肯改,还来得及。
Long ago, a shepherd kept a flock of sheep. One morning, he counted his flock and found one missing. The pen had a hole in the fence, and in the night a wolf had slipped through and carried a sheep away.
A neighbor told him, “Fix that hole right now, or you'll lose more.” The shepherd shrugged. “The sheep is already gone — what's the point?” And he did nothing.
The next day, sure enough, another sheep was missing. This time he understood. He grabbed wood and straw and patched the hole tightly. From that day on, he never lost another sheep.
People came to say: “Mending the pen after losing a sheep is not too late.” As long as you are willing to fix the problem, there is still time to set things right.
