井底之蛙
井底的青蛙以为井口就是整个天空。比喻见识短浅的人。
A frog at the bottom of a well — someone with a narrow view of the world.
有一只小青蛙,一直住在一口浅浅的井里。它每天看到的天,就是井口那么大的一个圆圈。它觉得自己的井很宽,自己的世界最美。
一天,一只大海龟路过井边。小青蛙骄傲地对海龟说:“你看!我这井多大!我可以在里面跳来跳去,还能在水边歇脚,谁能比得上我?”
海龟笑了笑,告诉青蛙:“我住在大海里。大海宽广得看不到边,深得看不到底。不管下多少雨,海水也不会涨得太多;不管天多旱,海水也不会少多少。那才叫真正的大。”
小青蛙听了,目瞪口呆,才知道自己从前的“世界”原来那么小。
Once there was a little frog who lived at the bottom of a shallow well. Every day, the patch of sky he could see was only as wide as the mouth of the well. He thought his well was huge and his world the finest there was.
One day a great sea turtle came by. The frog puffed up proudly and said, “Look at my well! I can hop around in it, rest by the water — who could possibly be happier than I am?”
The turtle smiled and said, “I live in the sea. It is so wide you cannot see the other side, so deep you cannot see the bottom. No matter how much rain falls, the water barely rises; no matter how dry the year, it barely sinks. That is what vast really means.”
The little frog stared in silence. Only then did he realize how tiny his world had been.
