东山再起
离开后重新出来工作或活跃起来。比喻失败或退下之后,再一次振作、回到舞台。
Rising again from East Mountain — making a strong comeback after stepping away.
东晋时候,有一位很有才能的人,名叫谢安。他年轻的时候,朋友们都劝他去做官,他却不想过那种忙碌的日子,带着家人搬到东山,一住就是许多年。
在东山,谢安每天和朋友一起读书、下棋、写文章,过得清清爽爽。可是他心里,始终惦记着天下的百姓。
有一年,北方的敌人很强大,朝廷打了几次仗都不顺利,国家眼看就要出大乱子。大臣们想来想去,一致请谢安出来帮忙。这一年,他已经四十多岁了。
谢安答应了。他从东山走了下来,重新回到朝廷,带兵打了著名的淝水之战,把敌人打得落花流水,保住了东晋。人们从此说他:“东山再起。”
后来,“东山再起”就用来形容一个人失意或退下之后,又重新出来做事,再次成功。
In the Eastern Jin dynasty there lived a very talented man named Xie An. When he was young, his friends urged him to take a government post, but he did not want a busy official life. He took his family to live on East Mountain, and there he stayed for many years.
On East Mountain, Xie An spent his days reading, playing chess, and writing essays with friends. Life was peaceful. Yet in his heart he never stopped thinking about the people of the land.
One year, enemies from the north grew very strong. The court lost battle after battle, and the country was in danger. The ministers thought it over and together begged Xie An to come out and help. By then he was already in his forties.
Xie An agreed. He came down from East Mountain, returned to the court, and led the army in the famous Battle of Feishui, crushing the enemy and saving the Eastern Jin. From then on people said of him, “He has risen again from East Mountain.”
Today “rising again from East Mountain” describes someone who, after setback or retirement, steps back into the arena and succeeds once more.
